home again...maybe

my GOD! i've been gone a long time, haven't i? jeesh. I've been absolutely swamped and haven't had much room for anything personal. between work and school, i feel so creatively drained. getting pulled in all directions at the moment. and with a sore wrist to boot.
and then i found audrey. who could resist her? not i said the cat. setting aside orientation, i'd marry the woman in a heartbeat, if i were staring in those roman holiday eyes. and i am very thankful to her for getting me out of my slump. I hope i won't fall back in tomorrow.
here's hoping for the best.

what's good on tonight?

a couple of months ago, the animation studio where I work was asked by National Geographic to do some effect works for a documentary they where doing on Darwin's note book. Everyone did such a great job on it, considering the week and a half deadline. I also got to play a small part in it. It was my first real assignment with them, and I really couldn't have asked for a better one. Through the magic of after effects, I was asked to produce about ten sketches, two different animals (the tortise here, and you can kind of see one of the bird heads, though they weren't very good, imo), that darwin would have drawn in his notebook, and the other guys had to make it look like he had drawn them. there would be a voice over or something. I did them, almost sure they'd get cut, but low and behold, they made the front page of the promo website! gadzooks!
if you have the national geographic channel and are free tuesday, feb the tenth, then why not settle down with a good documentary on evolution? hmmm?

*cricket*

wow, it's been way too long! did everyone have a nice christmas? screw that! how was your thanksgiving?! good god! I guess it goes without saying that i've been busy, but I'll say it anyway. Too late, I already said it. Anyway, I was waiting until the studio put up the spot for the discovery channel that I helped design/animate on youtube, but I don't know if that's ever going to happen.
but this little lady was too good, to not share with you all. it seems i'm getting closer still to being a honest to gosh painter!
apologies for creepiness.

REEL!!!
ok, so you may be wondering what the HELL i've been doing when not drawing, doodling and otherwise wasting time. Well, the answer is school! i've set aside my illustrators paintbrush/stylis and picked up the animators mouse, mainly because i'm a glutton for punishment.
This is what has come out, as of three months. This is my progress reel as of mid september. It's amazing how much i'm learning, almost as if i'm running out of room in my brain. Where will i be a year from now?! I love it. The only thing that i don't like, is that it gets in the way of drawing time. But it's a total learning process, and I just can't get enough.
just one more thing in an endless library to know.

long enough for you?

wow, does anyone still come here? sorry for the ridiculously long absence, i've been busy, in the job switching process, and been doing alot of work, but i can't show any of it. normally when i get home, i just want to sleep, read the news or go into a netfilx induced autopilot. but i came across something today that really made me want to do something for myself again. sadly, if you don't have a good moniter this piece won't come across quite as well, and even if you do well...then you do!
i have more ideas.
i'm not done with this blog yet!
i hope.

few sketches
I really wish i had more to contribute than some crumby sketches, but i've been busy with so much, and given little time to my own work, which is sad. I plan on doing more soon. but you know what they say about mice and men...

i did this after watching the perseids meteor shower a few weeks ago. two nights of staring at the stars gave me a whomping 39 shooting stars. a personal record, which i could have beat if i tried harder. i really want to color this, but don't see it in the cards.

studies for a short i want to work on in september. the story's all worked out, i just need to get off my ass and do it. i also need to cut down on these bug eyes. i'm becoming a one trick pony.
hope all's well!

the artist at age 24
i think it should come to no surprise to anyone who knows art history, that i've learned alot of what i know about color comes from three artist: jc leyendecker, john singer sargent and rembrandt. the later has to be one of my absolute favorite of the old masters. Such emotion and drama in even something as simple as a self portrait...

this is the artist at 23. Just stunning work. He has one other from 22 but it really isn't as good. the man's name is thrown around alot, and rightly so, as their are very few artists in history who hold such knowledge of technique and weave story and symbolism in a painting. i saw this one when i was in london two years ago and i was wondering if i could ever be that good at such a young age. So i tried my hand at it...

this is the artist at 24. not even close right? cartoony would be a good word, looking at it now. to be fair, i only spent three hours on it. But also, I've never in my life had to mix my own paints. i've learned from both photographs and video reference that spans time and space. i've had a beavy of teachers telling me everything they know from everyone they know. i have photoshop, and an unlimited palette of colors and shades, and it still came out shoty. it makes one feel so lazy sometimes. hopefully this isn't the last i see of this painting.
back to the drawing board, so to speak.

what loosing steam looks like

pffffft....i did the sketch in between projects at work while listening to herman melville's "typee". I brought it home to color but just lost total intrest in doing anything else more than this, but didn't want to let it die in vain.
on that note, books on tape rock. In the past month I've listened to: typee (half way through), dracula, sleepy hallow, the heart of darkness, a modest proposal, the red badge of courage and two harry potters. The hobbit and the dexter books are in the pipeline.
hope everyone's well!

new header!!!
think of it as a gift from me to my poor unloved blog. I couldn't help it, I found this bad ass tutorial and just had to try my hand at it. pretty easy stuff too. try it!
http://thebesttutorials.com/
here's another one, but it really didn't fit. cool looking as it is...

and then once i figured it out, i tried a few different yet simple things

i'll probably have to change it soon since everyone's going to be doing this crap...
